Contemporary Maison De La Lumiere by Duilio Damilano
Architect Duilio Damilano’s design for the contemporary Maison De La Lumiere was borne of two objectives – to steer clear of the predictable, stereotypical style of home found in surrounding Bologna, Italy; and to make it a hi-tech haven for the homeowners. The result is this modern design, separated from its neighbors by green living walls which encircle the house. Beyond the garden gate is the home’s contemporary, continuous floor plan that leads visitors from the outdoor swimming pool through the kitchen and to a glass-enclosed, open-to-above living room with a view to the home’s upper floor. Satisfying the architect’s tech-savvy objective, the house in entirely wired and automated, offering a truly modern, touch-of-a-button lifestyle of luxury.
Arrowhead House by Edwards Design Group
Blending architecture and environment is Doug Edwards specialty. Edwards, Design Principal of Arizona based Edwards Design Group, styled Arrowhead House with a respect for the desert and an adaptive quality that thrives in the oft-harsh Scottsdale climate. This contemporary, low-profile bungalow design was recently honored in the 2008 Spirit Awards and Leading Architects, as reported by Builder News Magazine. The home’s modern, circular roof boasts an ever-expanding overhang that begins as a three-ft. ledge at the east end of the home, and grows to an expansive 27-ft. roof atop an outdoor living area at the west end, keeping the heat of the day at bay while framing the gorgeous desert sunsets. Ultimately, the success of this design, and Edwards’ others, comes down to location, location, location. “It has everything to do with it, really,” Edwards told Builder News Magazine. “I always use five different parameters when I design a house. I look at solar orientation, the view corridor – if there is one – the natural vegetation and accessibility. With this house, we really wanted to capture the panorama, with a view of the city at the bottom of the hill.”
Luxury home by Shane Black Design LLC
Designed and built by Shane Black of Shane Black Design LLC, this luxury home in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, takes a slightly slanted approach to the traditional home. Physically designed with tilted walls and an unconventional roofline, there is nothing “conventional” about this modern design. The funky facade is matched by a fun, animated interior boasting bright finishes, dramatic lighting and architecturally interesting details, like the whimsical open-to-above kitchen and the “holy” metal staircase leading up to the home’s second floor. The house is currently on the market with Coldwell Banker at a list price of $549,000.
